چکیده

Examination of the upper-air sonde data taken in conjunction with the North American Monsoon Experiment (NAME) revealed that data at several sites in the core monsoon region exhibited a significant dry bias. In this study, a simple, yet effective, statistical correction technique is applied to correct this dry bias. In addition, a second correction is applied to all Vaisala RS80-H sondes to remove a daytime dry bias resulting from solar heating of the humidity sensor. Moisture analyses computed from the corrected sondes compare favorably to those from independent satellite and aircraft estimates. The corrections led to significant improvement in the description of the humidity field and in several convective parameters, such as precipitable water (PW), CAPE, convective inhibition (CIN), and in the diurnal cycle of apparent drying Q2.

Dry Bias and Variability in Vaisala RS80-H Radiosondes: The ARM Experience

Thousands of comparisons between total precipitable water vapor (PWV) obtained from radiosonde (Vaisala RS80-H) profiles and PWV retrieved from a collocated microwave radiometer (MWR) were made at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program’s Southern Great Plains Cloud and Radiation Testbed (SGP CART) site in northern Oklahoma from 1994 to 2000. These comparisons show that the RS80-H r...

Comparisons of 7-year Radiosonde Data from Two Neighboring Stations and Estimation of Random Error Variances for Four Types of Radiosondes

It has always been a challenge to assess the accuracy and precision of radiosonde instrumentation due to the lack of transfer standards for comparisons. One of ways for such assessment is to compare data collected from neighboring stations. The U.S. National Weather Service radiosonde station at Norman, OK is 25 km away from a research station located at Purcell, OK operated by the Atmospheric ...

In Situ Validation of a Correction for Time-Lag and Bias Errors in Vaisala RS80-H Radiosonde Humidity Measurements

Radiosonde relative humidity (RH) measurements are fundamentally important to Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program goals because they are used in a wide variety of both operational and research applications, including initialization of numerical models and evaluation of model results, validation of remote-sensor water vapor retrievals, construction of water vapor climatologies and st...

Water vapour and ozone profiles in the midlatitude upper troposphere

We present an investigation of upper tropospheric humidity profiles measured with a standard radiosonde, the Vaisala RS80-A, and a commercial frost-point hygrometer, the Snow White. Modifications to the Snow White, to enable the mirror reflectivity and Peltier cooling current to be monitored during flight, were found to be necessary to determine when the instrument was functioning correctly; a ...

Interactive comment on “Evaluation of two Vaisala RS92 radiosonde solar radiative dry bias correction algorithms” by A. M. Dzambo et al

This is not correct. While the RS92 RH sensor does respond much faster than RS80, time-lag error can still be substantial when T < -45C. The sensor time-constant at 45C is about 15 s, and at -70C it is 105 s. At a 5 m/s ascent rate this corresponds to a 63% sensor response on vertical scales of 75 m and 525 m respectively, which is the scale over which humidity features are "smoothed" by slow s...
